What's It Really Like to Send Your Kid to a Catholic School?

17 Jul 2026

news-17-07

If you've ever assumed that attending a Catholic school means you have to be Catholic and that the fees are expensive, you're not alone. It's a common perception, but for many families, the reality looks quite different.

You don't need to be Catholic to belong.
Catholic schools offer character formation that respects the religious and non-religious backgrounds of all students. Day to day, faith shows up through kindness, resilience, service to others, and a genuine sense of belonging, built through learning and social justice programs that let kids make a real difference.

The curriculum looks a lot like you'd expect.
Catholic schools teach the NSW curriculum and are proud of the academic achievements of our students. Religious Education is designed for students of any religious or non-religious background. For those students who are Catholic, it aims to support them in understanding their faith. For other students, it aims to help them learn more about a Catholic understanding of life.

Academic results speak for themselves.
Catholic schools consistently punch above their weight - strong HSC results, dedicated teachers and a genuine sense of community that means every student is known and supported.

The benefits last well beyond graduation.
A 2025 study using HILDA data found Catholic school graduates were, on average, more likely to be employed, reported higher life satisfaction and better general health, were more likely to donate to charity, and earned a 4-11% wage premium vs government-school peers after controls.

And the fees question - it's more affordable than people assume.
Catholic education isn't the exclusive, expensive world some parents imagine. Fees are kept as low as possible, with families paying less each day than they'd spend on everyday essentials like lunch or parking. Sibling discounts are available, flexible payment plans are standard and schools work with families experiencing genuine financial hardship. No family is turned away simply because of their inability to pay.

The bottom line:
Catholic schools today are inclusive, high-achieving, values-driven communities. The best way to see what one is really like is to experience it firsthand. Attend an open day or speak with staff about the programs and community that make each school unique.

Curious what this looks like in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains?

Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) is a community of 80 schools where every family is welcomed and supported to thrive. With affordable fees, high-quality learning programs, state-of-the-art facilities and a strong focus on wellbeing and belonging, CSPD schools empower every child to strive for greatness.

Find your local CSPD school and register for an Open Day

Learning Together Through Faith Our Year 4 students recently had the opportunity to share their learning with our Year 2 classes by presenting a slideshow they created as part of their Religion unit, "Why do people sometimes do the wrong thing?" Through their presentations, the students explained what an informed conscience is and how it helps us make thoughtful, loving and responsible choices each day. They confidently shared their knowledge, answered questions and encouraged our younger students to think about how they can make good choices in their own lives. It was wonderful to see our Year 4 students demonstrating leadership through service as they helped our Year 2 students deepen their understanding of our Catholic faith. Well done, Year 4!🙏🏼💚 #BelongToSomethingGreater #cspd2026 #100yearsofcatholiceducation #learningisfunatstpatsparramatta #catholicschools #learningisfunatStPats #cspd

Our Story, Told by Every Hand As we conclude our NAIDOC Week celebrations, we are proud to unveil our collaborative artwork, inspired by the stories Billie shared with our students. After learning about the 'forever art' created by Aboriginal Elders to share their communities' stories, every student at St Patrick's added their own handprint to create a unique artwork that tells the story of our school community. Our Year 6 students proudly completed the final touches, bringing together a masterpiece created by every child. As we celebrate this year's NAIDOC Week theme, "50 Years of Deadly," this artwork reminds us that every story matters, every culture is valued, and every student has left their mark on the story of St Patrick's. We hope you enjoy our masterpiece as much as we enjoyed creating it. Watch out for our beautiful community art piece at school. #BelongToSomethingGreater #cspd2026 #100yearsofcatholiceducation #learningisfunatstpatsparramatta #catholicschools #cspd #learningisfunatStPats #NAIDOCWeek #50yearsofdeadly #naidocweek #50YearsOfDeadly

💙 Go the Blues! 💙 Tonight is State of Origin night, and while we know some of our St Patrick's families will be proudly wearing maroon, we're getting behind the NSW Blues! While these photos were originally taken earlier this year when our students wore blue to celebrate Ms Barton's upcoming wedding, we thought they were the perfect way to show our support for the mighty Blues. Good luck to the NSW team as they take on Queensland tonight. We'll be cheering you on every step of the way! 💙 Go the Blues! 💙

Learning Through Story, Culture and Connection Today we are celebrating the experiences of our Kindy, Years 3 and 1 students during our NAIDOC Week incursion with Billie. Students listened carefully to stories, explored traditional artefacts, enjoyed music and dance, and learnt how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have been sharing knowledge and history through storytelling for generations. Each experience helped our students build a deeper appreciation of the rich cultures that continue to shape our nation. #50YearsOfDeadly #naidocweek #50yearsofdeadly #BelongToSomethingGreater #cspd2026 #100yearsofcatholiceducation #learningisfunatstpatsparramatta #catholicschools #cspd #learningisfunatStPats

Celebrating NAIDOC Week – 50 Years of Deadly This week, we proudly celebrate NAIDOC Week and this year's milestone theme, "50 Years of Deadly," honouring five decades of celebrating the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our Year 4 students experienced a special cultural incursion led by the wonderful Billie. Students explored traditional dress, listened to the sounds of instruments made from bamboo and wood, learnt traditional dances, and discovered how stories have been shared through art for countless generations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding, appreciation and respect for the world's oldest continuing culture. #50yearsofdeadly #50YearsOfDeadly #NAIDOCWeek #naidocweek #BelongToSomethingGreater #cspd2026 #100yearsofcatholiceducation #learningisfunatstpatsparramatta #catholicschools #learningisfunatStPats #cspd

🇦🇺💚💛 Go Socceroos! Year 4 showed their green and gold spirit last Friday as they came together to watch the Socceroos take on Paraguay in their final group match at the FIFA World Cup. The students loved cheering on Australia and learning more about teamwork, resilience and representing your country on the world stage. With stars like Jackson Irvine, Connor Metcalfe, Aziz Behich, Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato leading the way, our students are now eagerly looking ahead to tomorrow morning's huge knockout clash against Egypt. May the good luck continue! A win would see the Socceroos create history by claiming Australia's first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. What an incredible achievement that would be! Good luck, Socceroos! Our Year 4 students and the entire St Patrick's community will be cheering you on every step of the way. 💚💛 Come on, Australia! 🇦🇺⚽
